He was a member of the Cheboygan Eagles and enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and small engine repair. He worked for Cheboygan Manufacturing Company and retired as a foreman after more than 25 years of service. Bernard served his country honorably with the United States Army during the Korean War and was awarded the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. On Novemin Cheboygan, Bernard married Catherine Hudson.

Survivors include her daughter Karen (Charles) Stotts sons Gary (Diane), David (Julie), and Dale (Barbara Anne) Davison 13 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and one great great-grandchild. Barbara was an avid reader enjoyed all types of gardening, especially great with flowers, and loved to watch and feed the birds. She was also preceded in death by her husband Edward son John, brothers Altric, Herman Lauritz and Gordon Ruonavaara sisters Rosalie Benson and Eda Lindell, and brother-in-law Gus Davison.
